Our Story

The Founder - Lucas Helmke

As a child, I grew up in a small Victorian town called Tinamba where I was surrounded by more cows than people. My parents owned the local pub where I was expected to contribute to the family business each day after school. I was born into small business, and as soon as I could walk my mother and father put to me to work, That is where I learned the mechanics of business, what it takes to succeed and the ability to communicate with real people from all walks of life.

My formal education started at UNSW in the Australian Defence Force, where I began my Commerce Degree completing my degree at Deakin University in Melbourne, with distinction. I worked for three years in small accounting firms in Melbourne and the Gold Coast. I then took two years off to complete a Postgraduate Law Degree at Bond University specialing in taxation law. Upon completing my law degree, I started working for UHY Haines Norton then KPMG in the enterprise division specialising in small business for a further three years. During my time at KPMG, I completed my Chartered Accounting Diploma and obtained my Tax Agent License. By this stage, my entrepreneurial itch had taken hold, “evergent” was born.

You may have heard or seen the slogan “we’re not your average accountant”, I see myself not as an accountant but an entrepreneur, who specialises in enhancing your business through accounting. I tell it how-it-is in and communicate to you honestly, that’s what I use to differentiate myself and my firm. I always aim to improve myself both physically and mentally; it is this approach that I use to guide my business and my clients. I make a habit to continually seek out new and more efficient ways of running a business and I always redefine what no longer works. Finally, I build relationships with my clients, not business relationships real relationships built on trust and the genuine desire to grow and support each other and the business.

The above form the core characteristics of “evergent” and have become the cornerstone of our innovative and practical approach.

The Founder - Lucas Helmke

After a number of years working in small, medium-sized businesses, as well as one of the big four firms, it became evident to me, that the traditional internal process of accounting is outdated and inefficient. How clients are serviced can be inadequate with little to no focus on building and maintaining relationships. I quickly realised that no matter how advanced these firms become in technology, the bookkeeping systems and data entry processes remain unchanged, unimproved and inharmonious with what the client’s desires.

Poor client relationship, come communication, results in expensive and inadequate accounting. Traditional accounting firms remain unable or unwilling to invest the time to fix the underlying problem. This is why some businesses continue to spend upwards of $65,000 per year employing a bookkeeper and a further $5,000 – $20,000 per year on accounting compliance. Then add on the cost of simply picking up the phone and asking a simple question.

The disconnect between small business and accounting is compounded with the high fees quoted to Start-Ups. It is extremely important for Start-Ups to obtain advice surrounding the structure of their business however, the compliance costs associated lead to many not getting any advice at all. I know personally that start-ups often lack the cash flow needed to pay costly accounting fees and we have many solutions.
